Welcome, dear readers, to another cherished edition of my Friday Five! As the week draws to a close, this is my dedicated space to step away from the usual rhythm of recipes and culinary adventures. Instead, I invite you to join me for a more personal reflection, a heartfelt glimpse into the everyday moments, the profound lessons, and the simple joys that fill our lives. It’s a chance to connect on a deeper level, sharing the happenings that truly matter beyond the kitchen.
Can you believe that May is already bidding us farewell and the vibrant energy of summer has unequivocally arrived? It feels like just yesterday I was sending my little guy off to begin his third-grade journey, full of new discoveries and friendships. Now, with his last day of school just around the corner, the excitement for summer break is palpable in our home. The anticipation of longer days, spontaneous adventures, and a relaxed pace fills the air. This past month has been a whirlwind of emotions and new experiences, and I’m eager to share five significant highlights with you today, delving into the moments that have shaped our family recently.
1. Saying Goodbye to Mali: A Heartfelt Farewell to Our Beloved Companion
The month of May began with a heavy heart, as our family faced the incredibly difficult news that our sweet Mali girl was suffering from end-stage kidney failure. Making the gut-wrenching decision to say goodbye was one of the most painful experiences we’ve ever encountered. Mali and Lila, inseparable since birth, were litter mates, but Mali always possessed a unique sensitivity, a gentle soul that instinctively knew who needed extra love and comfort. She was, without a doubt, my girl—a cherished, irreplaceable member of our family in every conceivable way. From the time Miles was just a toddler, whenever anyone would inquire if he had siblings, he’d confidently declare, “Yes, I have two sissies,” referring to Mali and Lila. Her presence wove itself into the very fabric of our daily lives, from her quiet companionship during my work to her playful antics with the kids in the yard.
The void left by her absence is immense, and we’ve all been adjusting to life without her comforting presence. The quiet moments, the empty spot on the couch, the missing pitter-patter of paws – each serves as a poignant reminder of the love we shared. If you’ve ever had to endure the sorrow of saying goodbye to a furry member of your family, you understand the depth of this pain and the profound grief that accompanies such a loss. Pet loss is a unique kind of bereavement, often underestimated by those who haven’t experienced it, yet it leaves an undeniable imprint on our hearts. We are slowly, tenderly, navigating this new normal, cherishing every memory of our beautiful Mali and the unconditional love she so generously gave us. Her spirit will forever remain a part of our family story, a testament to the joy and companionship she brought into our lives. Grief is a journey, and we’re taking it one paw print at a time.

2. Family Photos: Capturing Life’s Precious Moments for Eternity
This Mother’s Day, I gifted myself something truly invaluable: a professional family photo session. While the thought of coordinating outfits, wrestling energetic children, and enduring the occasional groan from Miles (who, like many kids, isn’t the biggest fan of having his picture taken) can sometimes feel like an uphill battle, the end result always reminds me why it’s a worthwhile endeavor. If you reside in the Chicagoland area and are in search of an exceptional photographer, I wholeheartedly recommend Firefly Nights Photography. Megan possesses an incredible talent for capturing genuine moments, transforming what might feel like a chore into a delightful experience, and delivering stunning, timeless images that we will cherish for years to come. Her ability to make everyone feel comfortable and bring out authentic smiles is truly a gift.
The value of professional family photos extends far beyond simply having a nice picture for the mantelpiece. They are tangible keepsakes, freezing fleeting moments in time that we can look back on and relive for generations. Children grow up so incredibly fast, and these portraits serve as beautiful archives of their childhood, capturing their personalities and the love that binds us as a family. Each photograph tells a story, evokes a memory, and reminds us of the journey we’ve shared. It’s an investment not just in images, but in memory-making, in history, and in the enduring legacy of our family. I’ve learned that despite the temporary hassle, the regret of not taking the time to have professional photos done far outweighs any inconvenience. So, I urge you to consider it: when was the last time your family truly paused to capture your unique story through the lens of a talented photographer? Don’t let another year slip by without preserving these precious chapters.

3. Sweet Summer Time! Embracing a Low-Key Season of Joy and Connection
As we eagerly look ahead to the much-anticipated summer break, our family has intentionally opted for a pretty low-key summer plan this year. While grand adventures certainly have their place, there’s a unique charm and profound sense of connection that comes from embracing the simple, everyday joys of the season. Our days will be filled with the refreshing coolness of countless hours spent at the neighborhood pool, where laughter echoes and cannonballs make big splashes. The trampoline in our backyard will see endless jumps and flips, a perfect outlet for youthful energy and spontaneous fun. Driveway basketball games will become a regular occurrence, fostering friendly competition and creating lasting memories under the warm sun.
And of course, what would summer be without an abundance of popsicles? We’re talking too many to count, their vibrant colors and sweet flavors a quintessential symbol of childhood bliss and warm-weather refreshment. These moments, seemingly small, are the building blocks of a truly memorable summer. Beyond our daily routines, we’re also looking forward to a special long weekend trip to St. Joseph, Michigan. This charming lakeside town offers picturesque beaches, a quaint downtown, and the perfect backdrop for a relaxing family escape. It’s a cherished destination that promises a blend of relaxation and adventure, without the stress of a major cross-country journey. We believe a low-key summer allows for more spontaneity, deeper connections, and the freedom to truly savor the present moment without feeling overscheduled. So, tell me, do you have any fun activities or trips planned for your summer that you’re excited about? Are you leaning towards grand adventures or quiet, cherished moments?
4. My Favorite Snack: A Surprisingly Delicious and Addictive Combination
Now, for something a little different: my current obsession, a snack that might sound unusual at first glance, but I promise you, don’t knock it until you try it! This delightful combination was introduced to me by my in-laws, and what started as a hesitant bite slowly but surely grew into an undeniable addiction. I can confidently say I will be eating this on repeat all summer long, and quite possibly beyond. It’s incredibly simple to prepare, yet delivers a complex and satisfying burst of flavors and textures that hits all the right notes.
Here’s the magic formula: Start with your favorite crisp cracker – something sturdy enough to hold its own. Next, layer on a slice of zesty pepper-jack cheese. While pepper-jack is my personal preference for that subtle kick, feel free to substitute with any cheese you adore; a sharp cheddar or creamy havarti would also be excellent. The next crucial component is a crisp, refreshing slice of cucumber, adding a cool counterpoint to the cheese. Finally, and this is where it gets truly interesting, finish it off with a generous sprinkle of celery salt. The celery salt provides an unexpected savory depth and an earthy, umami flavor that ties everything together beautifully. Sometimes, when I’m feeling extra adventurous and craving a little more zing, I’ll add a dash of Tajín for a delightful sweet and tangy chili kick. The combination of crispy, creamy, fresh, savory, and subtly spicy is absolutely SO good and incredibly refreshing, especially on a warm day. It’s the perfect light bite to keep you energized. I’m always on the lookout for new snack ideas, so please share: what is your go-to snack lately that you just can’t get enough of?

5. Pretty Flowers: A Blossoming Passion for Gardening and Life’s Simple Pleasures
As the years gracefully unfold, I’ve come to a delightful realization: I am undeniably turning more into my mom each passing day, especially when it comes to the garden. I vividly remember her spending countless hours each summer, meticulously planting, nurturing, and tending to her vibrant flower beds. Back then, it seemed like just “mom’s hobby.” Now, here I am, finding myself doing the exact same thing, and to my pleasant surprise, I absolutely love it! There’s a profound sense of peace and accomplishment that comes with watching something beautiful grow under your care.
One of my absolute favorite days of the entire year is that exciting trip to the local garden shop. It’s a sensory feast, a vibrant explosion of colors and fragrances, as I carefully choose all of my flowers for the season. The anticipation of transforming empty pots and barren beds into a riot of blooms is truly exhilarating. This year, I’ve experimented with new varieties and old favorites, creating a tapestry of color that brings so much joy. You can catch a little peek at some of my beautiful finds this year in the photo below. My evening ritual has become heading outside, watering my thirsty flowers, and yes, even picking weeds. It might sound mundane to some, but there’s a meditative quality to it, a quiet connection with nature as the day winds down. Who am I, indeed, to find such contentment in pulling weeds? It’s a testament to how our passions can evolve and surprise us over time. I should probably confess that while I adore planting and caring for flowers, my track record with maintaining a thriving vegetable garden is, shall we say, less than stellar. Furthermore, I often struggle to keep houseplants alive, a constant source of playful frustration. But that’s perfectly okay! We all have our unique strengths and weaknesses, our particular green thumbs (or not!), and it’s about embracing what brings us joy and fills our souls, isn’t it?

And that, my friends, concludes this edition of Friday Five! It’s always a pleasure to step back and share these personal moments and reflections with you. Life is a beautiful tapestry woven with both joy and sorrow, and finding gratitude in the everyday is truly a precious gift. I hope these insights have offered a little connection, perhaps a chuckle, or even inspired you to try that unusual snack!
