As the calendar pages turn with surprising speed, we find ourselves already deep into March, with February having melted away like winter snow. It truly begs the question: where does the time go? It feels like just yesterday we were ringing in the new year, and now spring is almost upon us. This rapid passage of time only underscores the importance of pausing, reflecting, and cherishing the moments that make up our lives.
Today, I’m thrilled to bring you a fresh installment of my beloved Friday Five series – a dedicated space where I intentionally step back from the world of recipes and kitchen adventures to delve into the richer tapestry of life experiences, personal musings, and everything in between. It’s an opportunity for us to connect on a different level, sharing stories that resonate beyond the culinary realm.
I was genuinely touched by the overwhelming response to my last Friday Five post on Facebook. It had been quite some time since I shared such a personal update, and I honestly forgot how much joy it brings me to interact with all of you on topics that extend beyond food and cooking. Your comments, questions, and shared experiences create a vibrant community that I deeply value.
Speaking of comments, a quick note about our current system here on the blog: it’s undergoing some much-needed updates. So, for the time being, the absolute best place to engage and leave your thoughts is directly on my Facebook page. Please don’t hesitate to reach out there – I genuinely love hearing from each and every one of you!
One topic, in particular, sparked an incredible volume of emails and messages: dating. It seems I’m certainly not alone in navigating the exciting, sometimes bewildering, world of starting over and exploring online dating in my 40s. Your shared stories and questions made it clear this is a subject many of us are curious about, and I’m happy to share my journey as it unfolds.
February, while brief, was a month packed with a wonderful blend of everyday routines and some truly memorable highlights. From thrilling sports victories to sun-drenched getaways, it offered a much-needed dose of excitement and relaxation before the busy spring season truly kicks into gear.
Super Bowl Excitement: A Chiefs Kingdom Celebration
In case you somehow missed the exhilarating news – the Kansas City Chiefs are Super Bowl champions once again! This year’s game was an absolute nail-biter, a true testament to grit and determination, and watching it unfold was pure joy. What made the experience even more unforgettable was sharing it with some of my dearest friends. There’s something incredibly special about cheering on your team, riding the waves of every play, and celebrating monumental wins with people you love. Our Super Bowl party was filled with laughter, delicious food, and that infectious camaraderie that only big sporting events can bring.
My outfit for the day was a nod to one of the most iconic moments of the NFL season: a shirt featuring a shirtless Jason Kelce, commemorating that legendary Chiefs vs. Bills game. If you’re a fan, you know exactly what I’m talking about – a moment of pure, unadulterated passion that quickly went viral and encapsulated the raw energy of the sport. The anticipation leading up to the final whistle was almost unbearable, but the sheer elation of the win made every moment worth it. My son, Miles, true to his independent spirit, decided to root for the 49ers, just to playfully go against his mom’s choice. It’s those little family dynamics that add an extra layer of fun to any big event!

Florida Escape: Sunshine, Sand, and Serenity in Longboat Key
Without a doubt, the absolute highlight of February was our glorious trip to Florida. Miles and I, accompanied by my wonderful sister-in-law and niece, ventured south to the stunning Sarasota area, specifically to the tranquil paradise of Longboat Key. Escaping the biting Chicago winter for a destination bathed in sun and caressed by sandy beaches is always a dream come true. This particular vacation delivered on every promise of relaxation and rejuvenation. The rhythm of the waves, the warmth of the sun on our skin, and the gentle ocean breeze provided the perfect antidote to winter’s chill. It was a true chance to unwind, disconnect from daily pressures, and simply enjoy the beauty of our surroundings.
Miles, ever the social butterfly, quickly made several new friends at the resort pool. His favorite, by far, was a charming boy from the United Kingdom – Miles was absolutely captivated by his accent! It’s always wonderful to see him form new connections and experience different cultures, even if it’s just through playtime by the pool. These spontaneous friendships are often some of the most memorable parts of any family vacation.

Whenever I visit a place as beautiful as Florida’s coast, I often find myself pondering whether I would appreciate the beach as much if it were my everyday reality. Do Floridians stroll along the shoreline daily, or does its constant presence make it less of a special occasion? For me, there is truly nothing more soul-soothing than the simple act of walking on a soft, sandy beach, with the rhythmic sound of the ocean serving as a natural symphony. Every second spent soaking up that vital Vitamin D and breathing in the salty air felt like a precious gift. The feeling of the warm sand between my toes and the vast expanse of the ocean stretching out before me is a sensory experience I truly cherish.

Our accommodation for the trip was the exquisite Zota Beach Resort, and it was absolutely lovely. From the moment we arrived, we were enchanted by its elegant ambiance and thoughtful amenities. The resort offered everything we could wish for in a relaxing escape, from comfortable rooms to stunning views. Speaking of views, our room provided an absolutely breathtaking vista, making every morning coffee and evening sunset a moment to savor. The proximity to the beach and the serene atmosphere made Zota Beach Resort a truly ideal choice for our family getaway, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in the beauty and tranquility of Longboat Key.

Navigating the World of Dating at 40: Courage, Apps, and First Dates
Honestly, I hadn’t originally planned for dating to be a regular topic of discussion on this blog. However, as I mentioned, the sheer volume of emails and messages I received after my last update made it clear that this is a conversation many of you are eager to have. So, here I am, diving back into the sometimes-treacherous, often amusing, and ultimately hopeful waters of dating at 40. Your curiosity and shared experiences have truly encouraged me to continue opening up about this personal journey.
Many of you reached out, expressing a desire to re-enter the dating scene but admitting to being terrified by the prospect of joining an app or going on a first date. You specifically asked how I mustered the courage to take that leap. I remember it vividly: it was the tail end of March last year, 2023, when I finally downloaded Hinge, one of the popular online dating apps, and tentatively set up my profile. The truth is, I was incredibly nervous. For six wonderful years, I had found a profound contentment in being alone, cherishing my independence and the quiet rhythm of my life. Yet, a quiet realization had also begun to surface – how truly lovely it would be to find a partner to share life’s adventures with once again.
From the very outset, I made a conscious decision to approach dating with a mindset of fun and curiosity, rather than pressure or expectation. This perspective has been a game-changer. I’ve had the pleasure of talking to and meeting some truly great guys, leading to genuinely engaging conversations. These interactions alone, the simple act of conversing with another adult when your primary conversationalist is a nine-year-old boy, have been incredibly refreshing and enjoyable. It’s a different kind of mental stimulation and connection that I hadn’t realized I missed.
However, I would be lying if I said there were no nerves for that very first date. Sleep was minimal the night before, my mind racing through every conceivable scenario, both good and bad. Yet, as with most anxieties, it all turned out perfectly fine. And now, a year into this journey, I can confidently say I no longer get nervous for first dates. It’s a remarkable transformation, a testament to growth and resilience. The initial apprehension has given way to a sense of calm confidence and genuine excitement for new experiences.
If you’re contemplating starting your own dating journey, my most sincere advice is simply this: just do it. Take that first step. Download an app – Hinge and Bumble are my personal recommendations, known for fostering more meaningful connections. Dedicate some time to setting up a profile that genuinely reflects who you are. (I’ll admit, one of the hardest parts of creating my bio was finding enough recent, flattering pictures of myself! My camera roll, like many parents’, is predominantly filled with adorable photos of Miles.) Once your profile is ready, just start swiping. See what happens. Approach it with an open mind, a sense of adventure, and a willingness to explore. You might be surprised by the connections you make and the fun you’ll have along the way.
And on that note, if you have more “dating at 40” topics or questions you’d like me to delve into, please consider this an open invitation. I’m all ears and eager to continue this conversation, sharing insights and experiences as we navigate this exciting chapter together.
Friday Five for March 8, 2024: Discoveries and Delights
Beyond the major highlights of February, I’ve collected a handful of smaller, yet equally delightful, discoveries and musings I wanted to share with you this week. These are the little things that have brought joy, sparked curiosity, or simply made life a little more interesting lately.
1. A Fun Family Game: Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza!
If your family game nights are in need of a fresh, fast-paced, and utterly hilarious addition, you absolutely *must* try Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza. This game is incredibly simple to learn, making it perfect for a wide range of ages, from young children to adults. The premise involves quick reflexes, pattern recognition, and a healthy dose of silliness. Players take turns laying down cards while chanting “Taco! Cat! Goat! Cheese! Pizza!” and if a card matches the word, everyone slaps the pile. The chaos and laughter that ensue are truly infectious, creating memorable moments and guaranteed fun for the whole family. It’s a fantastic way to bond and let loose together.
2. Jackie and Shadow: The Endearing Bald Eagles of Big Bear Valley
I have become utterly obsessed with the captivating story of Jackie and Shadow, a magnificent pair of Bald Eagles residing in Big Bear Valley, California. They currently have a clutch of three precious eggs, and I find myself eagerly checking in on their live webcam at least once or twice a day. The dedication and personalities of these two eagles are truly remarkable. They navigate the challenges of nest building, incubation, and partnership with such grace and resilience. I’m completely invested in their journey and, like many others following along, my heart has already grown heavy with the thought that the first egg Jackie laid may not hatch, a reminder of the raw realities of nature. Watching them, you witness a true dynamic duo, each displaying distinct characteristics and an incredible bond that makes their story so compelling.
3. Pickleball: My New Favorite Court Sport!
Does anyone else play Pickleball? I vaguely remember playing it during high school gym class, but it’s been so long that most of the rules and details had completely faded from memory. Last week, on a whim, I decided to give it another try, and I’m so glad I did – it was incredibly fun! I’ve now played twice, and while I’m certainly not a pro (yet!), I’m genuinely excited to continue learning and practicing. Pickleball is a fantastic sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong, making it accessible for all ages and skill levels. Its social nature, relatively smaller court, and engaging gameplay make it a fantastic way to stay active, meet new people, and enjoy some friendly competition. I’m looking forward to improving my game and embracing this exciting new hobby!
4. Delicious Taquitos: An Easy Family Favorite
Have you had the chance to try this incredible recipe for Skinny Creamy Taquitos yet? I’ve made them a couple of times recently, and they’ve quickly become a staple in our household. They’re so easy to prepare, incredibly flavorful, and even Miles, my discerning eater, absolutely loves them! The beauty of this recipe lies in its simplicity and the delightful crispy texture it achieves. I’ve even been experimenting with an air fryer version that promises to be even quicker and just as delicious – a recipe I’m thrilled to be sharing with you all in just a couple of weeks! But for now, I highly recommend giving the oven-baked version a try. Let me know what you think; I’m confident they’ll be a hit with your family too!
5. Easter Inspirations: Charming Finds for the Upcoming Holiday
Easter is just around the corner, bringing with it the promise of spring, renewal, and delightful family gatherings. To get into the festive spirit, I’ve rounded up a few charming Easter-themed items that have caught my eye lately. Each of these finds adds a special touch to the holiday, whether for decorating, gifting, or simply enjoying the season.
Lego Easter Rabbits Display – These are just too cute! This Lego set offers a charming and creative way to add a festive touch to your Easter decor. It’s perfect for both kids and adults who appreciate the fun and intricate world of Lego, and it makes for a delightful seasonal display that can be brought out year after year. A wonderful alternative to traditional decorations.

The Eggmazing Egg Spinner – We actually own this, and it’s a fantastic, mess-free alternative to traditional egg dyeing! This ingenious device allows you to decorate eggs by spinning them while you apply markers, creating unique and vibrant patterns without the drips and spills of dye. It’s incredibly fun for kids of all ages and ensures a successful egg decorating experience every time. Highly recommend for a creative Easter activity!

Elegant Easter Dishes – While I adhere to a minimalist philosophy and typically only invest in one versatile set of dishes, I couldn’t help but admire the sheer beauty of these Easter-themed plates. They are absolutely stunning, featuring delicate designs and soft colors that would instantly elevate any Easter brunch or dinner table. For those who love to set a festive table, these would undoubtedly make for gorgeous and memorable Easter dishes.

Happy Easter, Mouse! If you, like us, are big fans of the charming “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie” book series by Laura Numeroff, then this Easter-themed installment is an absolute must-have. “Happy Easter, Mouse!” captures all the beloved elements of the series – the cyclical storytelling, the adorable illustrations, and the gentle humor – all wrapped up in a festive holiday package. It’s a wonderfully cute and engaging read-aloud that children will adore, perfect for adding to your Easter basket traditions or simply enjoying together during story time.

That wraps up this edition of Friday Five. It’s always a pleasure to share these snippets of my life and hear about yours in return. I hope you found something here that resonated, inspired, or simply brought a smile to your face.
As always, thank you so much for being a cherished part of this community. Your readership and engagement mean the world to me. I wish you all a wonderful, relaxing, and joy-filled weekend!
xoxo,
Ashley
