So, grab a warm drink, settle in, and let’s catch up on five things that have been on my mind, bringing me joy, or simply making me think lately. From seasonal delights to fascinating discoveries, I’m excited to share what’s been happening and hopefully spark some reflection for your own week.

1. Embracing the Warmth of Fall Decor
There’s an undeniable magic that comes with transforming your home for the seasons, and while Christmas holds a special place in my heart, autumn decorating runs a very close second. The rich colors, earthy textures, and comforting aromas of fall create an ambiance that’s both inviting and incredibly cozy. I find immense joy in curating spaces that reflect the beauty of the outdoors, making our home a sanctuary from the cooling weather. From rustic elements to subtle touches of harvest charm, fall decor has a unique ability to evoke feelings of warmth and nostalgia.
While the indoor fall decor is still awaiting its grand debut, I couldn’t resist a trip to our local flower shop. It’s truly amazing how a few key pieces can instantly elevate an entryway or a porch. This year, I’ve been particularly captivated by the charm of ornamental cabbage and pepper plants. Their vibrant colors and unique textures add an unexpected yet beautiful dimension to any autumnal display, bringing an unreasonable amount of joy to my doorstep. Paired with a towering stack of diverse pumpkins and gourds, these plants create a welcoming scene that perfectly captures the spirit of the season. Decorating for fall isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about celebrating the changing landscape, embracing coziness, and creating an environment where every corner tells a story of comfort and natural beauty. It’s a wonderful way to connect with the rhythm of the year and make your home a truly special place.

2. A Glimpse into Life Lately: Adventures, Annoyances, and Achievements
The past month has been a delightful mix of routines, new experiences, and a few pesky challenges. It’s always interesting to look back and see how much can happen in just a few weeks. Here’s a peek at what’s been filling our days:
- Weighted Vest Walks: I’ve incorporated weighted vest walks into my routine, adding a new dimension to my fitness journey. It’s amazing how a little extra resistance can transform a regular walk into a more challenging and rewarding workout, helping to build strength and endurance without needing a gym.
- Pumpkin Treats Galore: Fall wouldn’t be complete without indulging in seasonal flavors. My current obsession? The Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew at Starbucks! It’s that perfect blend of sweet, spicy, and creamy that just screams autumn. Beyond coffee, we’ve been experimenting with pumpkin-themed snacks and desserts, making the most of this delicious time of year.
- Backyard Catch & Football Fever: Miles has officially caught the football bug! Our backyard has become the main arena for spirited games of catch, and his enthusiasm for the sport is truly contagious. It’s been wonderful to see him develop his skills and passion, and these moments of outdoor play are priceless for family bonding.
- First Foray into Fantasy Football: In an adventurous twist, I’ve decided to try my hand at fantasy football for the very first time! Navigating the drafts, trades, and weekly scores has been a steep learning curve, but it’s a fun way to engage with the sport and add a little competitive excitement to Sundays. Anyone else out there immersed in the world of fantasy leagues?
But amidst these joys, there’s always one tiny, persistent annoyance that seems to make its annual appearance: fruit flies. 😡 It feels like overnight, our kitchen transforms into their favorite hangout spot, and their numbers multiply with alarming speed. If you’ve ever dealt with these minuscule invaders, you know the frustration. They seem to appear out of nowhere, determined to sample every ripe fruit and vegetable in sight. After trying various store-bought solutions with limited success, I finally decided to create a homemade fruit fly trap that actually works, and I absolutely NEED to share this game-changer with you!
This simple, effective method utilizes common household items and provides immediate relief. Here’s how to set up your own:
- Prepare Your Container: Start with a small jar or bowl. This will be the housing for your trap.
- Add the Attractant: Pour a small amount of apple cider vinegar into the container. The fruity, fermented scent of apple cider vinegar is incredibly alluring to fruit flies, drawing them in like a magnet.
- Introduce the Trap: Add just a drop or two of dish soap to the vinegar. This is the crucial step. The soap breaks the surface tension of the vinegar, so when the fruit flies land to investigate, they’ll sink rather than simply floating on top.
- Create the Entrance: Cover the top of your jar or bowl tightly with plastic wrap. Then, using a toothpick, poke several tiny holes all over the plastic wrap. These small openings allow the fruit flies to enter, but make it very difficult for them to find their way back out.
- Observe the Magic: Place your trap in the affected area, usually near fruit bowls or compost bins. You’ll be amazed at how quickly the fruit flies gravitate towards it, eager to get to the irresistible bait. This simple DIY solution offers a safe and chemical-free way to reclaim your kitchen from these tiny pests.
It’s truly satisfying to find a practical solution to an everyday problem, and this fruit fly trap has been a lifesaver in our home. Give it a try if you’re battling these persistent little nuisances!

3. The Astonishing Journey of Hummingbirds: A Tiny Marvel
If you followed my Friday Five from August, you’ll remember how much joy hummingbirds brought to our backyard throughout the summer. Their iridescent feathers and rapid, almost magical flight are a constant source of wonder. Lately, however, I’ve noticed fewer of these tiny aerial acrobats, which naturally led me to ponder: where do hummingbirds go when winter approaches?
The answer, it turns out, is nothing short of incredible. These diminutive creatures, weighing less than a penny, embark on an epic migratory journey. They pack their metaphorical bags and head south for the winter, seeking the warmer climates of southern Mexico and Central America. This migration is a testament to their remarkable resilience and navigational prowess.
But here’s the part that truly blew my mind: many species, particularly the Ruby-throated Hummingbird, undertake a non-stop flight across the vast expanse of the Gulf of Mexico. Can you even fathom a bird so small, with an average length of just three inches, flying hundreds of miles over open water without a single break? This incredible feat requires immense energy reserves and an unparalleled determination. They fuel up intensely before their journey, consuming up to double their body weight in nectar to store fat, which serves as their energy source for the long, arduous flight. It highlights the profound wonders of the natural world and the extraordinary capabilities of even its smallest inhabitants. Learning about their migration only deepens my appreciation for these vibrant, delicate visitors and makes me look forward even more to their return next spring.
4. My Current Media Mix: Stories, Sounds, and Screens
There’s nothing quite like unwinding with a good book, getting lost in captivating stories on screen, or letting music transport you. Here’s what’s been on my rotation lately, offering a perfect escape and plenty of entertainment:
- Reading: I recently picked up Regretting You by Colleen Hoover (buy on Amazon), and it has completely drawn me in. Hoover has a unique talent for crafting emotionally charged narratives that delve deep into complex relationships and the nuances of human emotion. This novel, like many of her others, explores themes of love, loss, betrayal, and forgiveness with a raw honesty that makes it impossible to put down. Her characters are incredibly relatable, and the story’s twists keep you guessing until the very end. If you’re looking for a heartfelt and thought-provoking read, this one comes highly recommended.
- Listening: Of course, like many, I’ve been absolutely immersed in Taylor Swift’s latest album, which I mistakenly called The Life of a Showgirl – a small slip, but the excitement is real! Her new release, an electrifying journey through her musical evolution, has been on repeat. Each track tells a story, showcasing her unparalleled songwriting prowess and ability to connect deeply with listeners. It’s an album that perfectly captures various moods, from reflective ballads to anthemic pop, making it the ideal soundtrack for everything from a morning walk to a cozy evening at home.
- Watching: My guilty pleasure, Dancing with the Stars, is back with a fantastic season! The pairings this year are exceptional, leading to some truly memorable performances. I was particularly impressed by Scott Hoying and Rylee Arnold’s incredible dance this past week; their chemistry and skill were undeniable. And let’s not forget the delightful surprise of Andy Richter, whose dance with his partner Emma Slater was full of charm and genuine effort. Beyond the ballroom, I’ve also just started Black Rabbit on Netflix and am two episodes in. It’s a gripping series that immediately hooks you with its intriguing plot and strong performances. The suspense is building beautifully, and I’m eager to see where the story goes next.
Now, I’d love to hear from you! What narratives, melodies, or visuals have been captivating your attention lately? Sharing our discoveries is one of the best ways to find new favorites. What have you been reading, watching, or listening to that you can’t stop thinking about?
5. On the Horizon: Moments of Joy and Anticipation
Looking ahead, there are a few things that are sparking immense excitement and anticipation in our household. These upcoming events and simple pleasures serve as wonderful reminders of the good things yet to come:
- Miles’ Bedroom Makeover through Special Spaces: This is, without a doubt, the most heartwarming news. Miles has been nominated for a bedroom makeover through an extraordinary organization called Special Spaces. This incredible non-profit dedicates itself to creating dream bedrooms for children battling cancer, providing them with a personal sanctuary where they can rest, play, and heal. The thought of this transformation for Miles fills us with an indescribable joy and gratitude. He is beyond excited, and so am I! It’s a powerful testament to the compassion and generosity of people in the world who dedicate their time and resources to bringing comfort and happiness to children facing incredibly tough battles. We can’t wait to see the magic unfold and witness the joy it brings to him.
- Cooler Weather’s Embrace: Currently, Chicago is experiencing record-high temperatures, making it feel more like a lingering summer than the heart of autumn. While I know I’ll inevitably regret saying this in a month or two when the biting cold and snow arrive, right now, I am absolutely ready for some cooler temps! I’m longing for that crisp, refreshing air that signals true fall – the kind of weather that invites cozy sweaters, crackling fires, and warm mugs of tea. It’s the perfect backdrop for all those quintessential autumn activities, from enjoying outdoor walks to simply snuggling up indoors.
- Indulging in Creamy Chicken Noodle Soup: With the anticipation of cooler weather comes the craving for ultimate comfort food. There’s something uniquely soothing and nostalgic about a bowl of creamy chicken noodle soup. It’s the perfect meal to warm you from the inside out, especially on a chilly evening. I’m really looking forward to making this particular recipe, which promises a rich, comforting flavor that’s both satisfying and easy to prepare. It’s the culinary embodiment of coziness and a staple for the autumn and winter months.
That wraps up this week’s “Friday Five”! It’s been a pleasure sharing these snippets of life with you. Before I sign off, I’d love to engage with you further. Your thoughts and experiences always enrich this community.
