A Heartfelt Update from Ashley: Navigating Life’s Toughest Challenges with Strength and Community Support
Hello cherished friends and members of this wonderful culinary community,
I know many of you typically visit for delicious recipes and culinary inspiration, and while I promise to continue sharing those joyful creations, today’s message comes from a much more personal place. For years, many of you have stood by my side, remembering the incredibly difficult season we endured when my husband battled cancer and ultimately passed away. During that heartbreaking time, our baby son, Miles, was also undergoing dialysis, desperately awaiting a liver and kidney transplant. It was a period that tested the very limits of our strength and resilience, and now, with a heavy heart, I must share that we are facing yet another profound challenge.
Miles’s New Battle: A Rare Post-Transplant Complication
Just recently, my beloved son, Miles, was diagnosed with cancer. Yes, the same brave boy who, as a baby, navigated the complexities of dialysis and underwent a life-saving liver and kidney transplant. He is now ten years old, a vibrant and energetic boy, and has been diagnosed with Burkitt Lymphoma – PTLD (Post-Transplant Lymphoproliferative Disorder). This is an exceptionally rare and aggressive form of cancer, specifically linked to the immunosuppressive medications he takes to protect his transplanted organs. Hearing these words felt like an unimaginable blow, a cruel twist of fate for a child who has already overcome so much.
As his mother, the profound wish that he wouldn’t have to face one more hurdle, one more difficult treatment, echoes constantly in my mind. The past few weeks have truly felt like a surreal nightmare, especially because this diagnosis arrived with such sudden and unexpected force. Just a week before this life-altering news, we were enjoying a carefree family trip in sunny San Diego, relishing beach days, exploring breathtaking cliffside trails, and, of course, indulging in our fair share of chips and salsa. Life felt normal, joyful, and full of promise, making the abrupt shift into the world of cancer treatment all the more disorienting.

The Shocking Diagnosis and Renewed Challenges
Our journey to this diagnosis began with a misstep, as doctors initially suspected a ruptured spleen due to severe pain Miles was experiencing. However, within a couple of agonizing days, further tests revealed the devastating truth: it was not a ruptured spleen, but cancer. This initial period of uncertainty, followed by the shocking confirmation, was incredibly difficult to navigate, plunging us into a maelstrom of fear and disbelief.
One particular day remains etched in my memory, a day filled with immense emotional and physical strain. After spending nearly an entire night pacing his hospital room, comforting Miles as he grappled with intense pain, we received more distressing news. His transplanted kidney, which had been functioning so remarkably well for years, was now struggling due to a condition called tumor lysis syndrome, a common complication when a large number of cancer cells rapidly break down. The doctors informed us that he would need to start dialysis again. This news hit us with a profound emotional weight, instantly resurrecting painful memories of the two and a half years he spent connected to a dialysis machine as a baby, a stark reminder of his past struggles and the fragility of his health. It was a crushing blow, but one we knew we had to face head-on.
Miles spent two intense weeks in the hospital, splitting his time between the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and the oncology floor. During this period, he endured five continuous days of round-the-clock dialysis, an exhaustive process for any child, especially one already weakened by illness. Simultaneously, he began his chemotherapy treatment, a critical step in his fight against Burkitt Lymphoma. While the hospital stay was undoubtedly arduous, we are now incredibly grateful to be home. A significant source of relief is knowing that his transplanted kidney has responded positively to treatment and is doing much better, meaning that dialysis is, thankfully, no longer needed. This improvement is a huge blessing and provides a ray of hope amidst the ongoing challenges.
Navigating the Path Ahead: Treatment and Hope
The road ahead for Miles involves weekly trips to the hospital for outpatient chemotherapy sessions. Each visit is a reminder of the battle he is fighting, but also a step towards healing. In a few weeks, he will undergo another PET scan, a crucial diagnostic tool that will help his medical team assess how his body is responding to the chemotherapy. The results of this scan will determine the future course of his treatment, guiding us on what the next phase of his journey will entail. We are hopeful for positive results, but prepared for whatever adjustments may be necessary.
Despite everything, Miles is generally feeling good, and he is immensely relieved to have the dialysis catheter removed from his neck. The hospital environment was a relentless series of difficult moments, and being back in the comfort of his own home has brought him considerable joy. While chemotherapy inevitably brings side effects, they haven’t been too severe for him so far. However, his poor little arms bear the visible marks of countless IV lines, a testament to the rigorous medical care he has received.
For me, as his mother, processing this new diagnosis continues to be an overwhelming challenge. It’s difficult to fully comprehend that this is truly happening again. Watching my son grapple with the worry that he might succumb to cancer, just as his father did, is an indescribable pain. And if I am to be completely honest, it has been a profound struggle to prevent the deep-seated trauma from my late husband’s cancer journey from influencing how I navigate this incredibly sensitive and critical situation with Miles. Every decision, every conversation, every moment is tinged with the echoes of the past, requiring immense inner strength and focus.
